What is sin?
Sin can be defined in different ways by different people. My definition of sin is this: Wrongdoing. It is an act of rebellion against God and His laws.
What and how does it destroy?
Personal
On a personal level, sin destroys an individual spiritually and physically. Sin causes separation from God (the source of all good things). Isaiah 59:2a says, “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God”. This is spiritual so many may not realize this immediately. On a physical level though, sin destroys your body. Research has shown that harbouring ill feelings could lead to depression, anxiety and other illnesses.
A heart at peace gives life to the body,
Proverbs 14:30 (NIV)
but envy rots the bones
others
Sin destroys relationships. I don’t think I need to stress this more. A common example is infidelity in a marriage. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that excessive alcohol use over time can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including liver disease, learning and memory problems, including dementia, social problems, including family problems, and unemployment.
Greed causes fighting;
Proverbs 28:25 (NLT)
trusting the LORD leads to prosperity
LarGE SCALE
Sin can even destroy a city or a nation. “Whoa! That seems like a stretch, Lovelyn!” It is true though. I visited British Columbia recently and noticed the high drug usage in certain parts. This has caused many to stay away from those parts out of caution or fear for their lives. There are other examples of sin causing problems within countries.
Righteousness exalts a nation,
proverbs 14:34 (NIV)
but sin condemns any people
I am not casting judgement on anyone. It’s hard to overcome these things on one’s own strength. The good news is that help is available. There is someone (Jesus) who has overcome the power of sin so that none of us need to struggle with it. Finally, I believe love does not celebrate wrongdoing so it needs to be called out and a solution provided.
