I stumbled on this information while looking for something else, but I am glad I did. Every year, on November 9, world adoption day is celebrated. It is a day to lift up all voices in the adoption community, to share your story, to reflect on your adoption journey and to connect with those touched by adoption.
Adoption, according to Oxford Languages, is the action or fact of legally taking another person’s child and bringing that child up as one’s own. The UN estimates that about 260,000 adoptions take place around the world each year. Also, the earliest recorded adoption is when the Pharaoh’s daughter adopted Moses in the Bible (story in Exodus 2:1-10).
Adoption is such a beautiful thing and while I was not adopted, as a believer, I am adopted into God’s loving family and get to enjoy the many blessings attached to that. I believe adoption comes from a place of love because it must take a lot to love a child who was not originally yours like they are.
I am aware that there are many adopted children who do not get to experience the joys of adoption and I sympathize with them. My consolation is that God does care and He loves you. And to those who get to experience the joys of adoption, God loves you way more than your biological and adoptive parents ever could.
And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty”
2 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV)
There is a website with more information on the origin of this celebrated day and how you can celebrate it.
Were you adopted or do you know someone who was? Would you consider adopting a child?
